A Sleeping Giant Awakens...

Late on the evening of March 22, 2009 plumes of smoke and ash began spewing from a vent in the summit crater of Redoubt Volcano. A day before the volcano erupted, a series of powerful eruptions rocked the area located on a glacier covered peak 110 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. Considered the 9th most dangerous volcano in the United States, Redoubt sent ash over 9.5 miles into the sky, causing a disruption in airline traffic and everyday life. As a layer of abrasive volcanic dust settles over nearby cities and towns, the locals are left with many unanswered questions. What caused this eruption? What kind of damage has the eruption caused? Will there be another eruption? Another series of earthquakes? Will the ash affect water and agriculture surpluses? What kind of weather changes will be expected after an eruption? Can eruptions be predicted or forewarned?
