I thought this project would work well if it was split into two parts. In the first part students would research and determine different problems, questions and worries that might arise in light of the recent eruption. Students could use the internet to read newspapers, encyclopedias, journals, etc., to learn about the concerns of locals, geologists, climatologists etc. This portion might need some more structure…
In the second part of the project the class could then split into groups, each student would have an assigned role in the group such as farmer, geologist (and the others we talked about in class). The group’s goal would be to address most of the questions the class came up with in the first part of the project. This would require that the questions be divided between the group members. Each would be responsible for his/her own research unique to their field. At the at the end of the project the group would have to present to a town meeting their recommendations as to how they would address the issues raised in the first half of the project. The group could decide how to present to the town meeting, instructional video, poster, presentation etc.

If this makes sense, and you all don’t mind I will type up the actual directions
