Process:

The Alaska Volcano Observatory, (a joint program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAFGI), and the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS)) have put together a committee to answer some of the questions and concerns that that the residents and business owners of Kenai, Ninilchik, Homer and other towns near Cook Inlet have. The committee—comprising teams of volcanologists, climatologists from the National Weather Service, public health officials, air safety officials, ground transportation officials, public water safety, waster water, power supply, communications, ashfall clean-up—will present their findings and recommendations in the form of a town meeting. Information will be disseminated at the meeting in the form of booklets, posters and video presentations.

Instructions:

The class as a whole will form the committee from the AVO. Team assignments are: volcanologists, climatologists from the National Weather Service, public health officials, air safety officials, ground transportation officials, public water safety, waster water, power supply, communications, ashfall clean-up.

1. To make sure that your team members fully understand their roles, open the dossiers containing your team’s assignment.

2. Once you have decided which team you want to belong to, open the folder for your team by clicking on the appropriate folder above.
3. Read the contents of the folder to get a feel for your tasks. Think about how your team’s role relates to the roles of other teams on the committee.
4. Brainstorm a list of the types of resources/information that you think would be useful to your team.
5. Explore the “Resources” below (and any others you feel would be helpful to your task).
6. Note the name of the internet/classroom resources next to your brainstormed list.

Helpful hints for your Virtual Investigations:




  1. Explore the resources that you think would be most appropriate for your role.
  2. Collect (Copy & Paste) the five artifacts (pictures, text etc.) that are useful to your task. Remember to keep track of the URL (the code that appears in the "Location" line in the browser). (For each artifact, make sure you know why you believe it is a good resource for your team.
  3. Once you have finished your search, choose the best artifacts for your topic.

As a Team of Experts

  1. Bring the best artifacts together and examine them as a team.
  2. Each expert must explain the significance of his or her artifact to the other team members.

The Special Report
You must present a 10 minute informational summary of your findings and recommendations at the Town Meeting. You may present your report using Power Point, or posters. Be prepared to answer questions on your findings or recommendations from citizens at the Town Meeting.





Project Requirements


1.
Create an Outline of Resources, in a word-processing application, following the prescribed format.
2. Handout summarizing findings, continuing efforts, and recommendations to citizens.
3. Presentation
4. Formulate two questions for each team that you can ask during the Town Meeting.

The Outline of Resources uses the following format:
1. State Title and Author of artifact
2. Cut and paste the excerpt from the artifact and transfer in to a word-processing application
3. Write a brief synopsis
4. State why this information supports your task.
